I recently aquired a fully working FW 800 1.42GHz Dual with 2GB of RAM and a Radeon 9000 Pro. I wanted to up the GPU power a bit and found an AGP 9650 from a G5 in my stash. Well, tape mod on 3 and 11 and good to go, right?
No. For some reason, the FW 800 models have two ADC power connectors near the AGP slot. One in front and one at the back. The one at the back sits where the latch of the 9650 sits, so that interferes.
See the difference in spacing:
And here the FW 800 Logic Board:
You can see that there is an extra connector between the battery holder and the latch of the AGP slot. What is that even used for? I can't find any cards using both ADC connectors - is it even an ADC connector? I'm thinking of what to do now. I could of course remove the latch from the 9650, or scour Ebay for some kind of flashable GPU to increase its power. I have 2003 1.25GHz which I'll use for ADC shenanigans, so I don't need to keep that in the 1.42GHz Dual.
