The problem keeps coming up that I need a DVD+R player for my PowerMac G4. I'm trying to find something inexpensive and decently fast, internal or external.
Most ATA DVD drives work fine in a Mac; to be sure, just go to OWC (they're Mac specialists, so they sell stuff that definitely works) and select your model--should take you here:
...where you can buy an internal for about $30. Installation takes a couple minutes with nothing but a phillips screwdriver if you're even remotely handy (OWC even has how-to videos).
If you want an external that'll require either sticking said drive in a FireWire/USB 5.25" external case (you probably want FW since your computer doesn't have USB2 built-in; it's also bootable), or get one pre-built from OWC:
You can also get the same stuff from NewEgg or any number of other retailers, but frankly the prices at OWC are nearly the same and since they guarantee their stuff will work fine in a Mac it's easier than worrying if the particular drive you get might not be fully Mac compatible (most ARE, but few explicitly advertise it, and there are glitches).
Just wanted to say thanks again. I got the SuperDrive delivered today and have just finished installing it and testing it; works perfectly! Great recommendation on OWC.
