I’m trying to see if anyone has a resolution for this issue. I have a 2.0 dual G5 (7,2) running 10.5.8. I have an issue with the Sony Superdrive. The drive will read and burn dvds just fine, but it will whirr audibly, fail to recognize and then eject any CDs I try (burned or retail). I’ve run ASD 2.5.7 and it passed all tests. I’ve tried swapping a pioneer Superdrive from another g5 but it behaves in the same way, so I assume this is some sort of software issue. Any ideas? Any help is much appreciated!

As far as I know, there is no software reason for any Mac to reject a known working CD but not a DVD - curiously did you try a music CD?

Normally a failing drive will go in the opposite direction; I.e CDs will work but DVDs will fail.

I would try a clean install of Mac OS X to see if that resolves the problem, otherwise it’s just a case of the drive(s) needing to be serviced or replaced.

I did try music CDs to no avail. I’ll try reinstalling the OS if I can’t find any other resolutions soon.

I have also tried a cd cleaning disk and it fails to detect and then ejects the disk. Does anyone know of a good SATA to IDE adapter? If I buy a new optical drive I need to be able to convert the SATA connections to the IDE cables in the Mac.

No need to spend that much. Just get a used IDE DVD-RW drive. I bought one recently to replace a failing CDROM drive and it cost pennies. There are plenty of those IDE drives around doing nothing.

I thought about that, but I’m a bit leery about buying another old used drive when I already bought another Superdrive off eBay that is experiencing the same issues.
