PowerMac G5, Video Card Upgrades, 10.5?

I've been doing a lot of reading regarding 10.5's high resolution interface, and I am wondering if my lowly 64mb 9600 in my G5 can handle it? Truthfully, I could care less about GUI bling, but if it is going to slow things down on my machine, well, then it does matter to me. I've never had a problem with my machine before, but I plan on keeping it for a few more years. If I need to upgrade, I'd like to find one that will last me until 10.6 arrives since that is when I plan on replacing my machine.

PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8ghz, Agp 8x/Pro slot

20" Cinema Display (DVI)

Budget, somewhere around $200-$250, although I'd prefer something closer to $150, so I can get another 1-2GB of RAM with the savings.

the 9600 will be fine in Leopard, definitely not a 9800 or X800, but will do just fine.

There are NO options for replacement cards today. ATI has promised several many months now with no 9800 or X800 being produced.

You can buy a flashed 9800, a flashed 7800 (geforce) or a used 9800, x800 or Geforce 6800 (which were sold in the early years of the G5's.

What apps do you use? Motion?

There are lots of options on ebay, lots of flashed video cards that would work with your G5 that offer some nice performance.

Mainly Adobe CS1, and Final Cut Express for when the time calls.

I never realised that the Apple Store stopped selling the AGP grfx cards.
The X800 XT card was definitely the best card for the AGP Power Mac G5 (going head-to-head with the GeForce 6800 Ultra), and the 9800 Pro SE wasn't all bad either.
Getting one of those will be difficult then.

If you really wan the best grfx for your G5, try to get one of these:
- ATi Radeon X800 XT Mac edition
- nVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra.
The Radeon 9800 Pro SE and the GeForce 6800 DDL aren't bad, but not the best. And as you're looking at non-Retail I suggest a good deal on one of the top two cards.

I ordered one yesterday and its on its way.

I've decided to continue using the G5 until its absolutely obsolete or otherwise broken. Its got 6GB of memory, 1.5TB of disk and other than the noise, its fine.
