PowerPoint 2008 - Can't insert text box or word art?

Am I missing something here? I'm using PP08 for the first time. I selected my theme, and am trying to insert a text box and some word art. I click the text box button, drag and create the box I want. Then, I try to click in it, and type- but it disappears. Same thing with Word art.

Have you updated to the latest version of PowerPoint 2008 (currently 12.1.2)? Are you on the latest version of your OS (either 10.4.11 or 10.5.5)?

What slide layout are you using? Does this happen on all slide layouts, or just one? Are you able to type on any kind of slide? Do you get any kind of error message?
