Powerpoint .pps to MP4 possible? Or another video format that can be played in VLC?
 
You could use PowerPoint > File > Save as Movie... and get a VLC compatible format.

The steps are shown in this rather short tutorial, but surely there are more thorough tutorials or guides on this matter a www search away.

I love it when people omit critical information and then get their backs up with they don't get the answer that they need.

Saving a PowerPoint presentation as an animation is not magic. It is a functionality that must be built into the application by the developer. In the case of OpenOffice.org and siblings, the built-in animation export format is Macromedia Flash (.swf). There is nothing that any member of this forum can do to add additional animation export formats.
