I noticed that the "energy saver" in Mac OSX automatically has the "turn off" hd feature turned on by default. If one repeatedly use then idle constantly, won't it be bad for the HD to be constantly turning on and off?
No. It is harder on the drive to spin constantly for extended periods than to turn on and off again. It's like the rationale that you should leave your car idling because turning it off for 5 minutes will wear out the innards. Bullocks in both cases.
