I'm also on an older Mac running Lion.
I was able to jailbreak my iPad 3 and iPhone 6+ using PP. At one point it failed due to lost connection, but worked the next time with a different cable. Maybe try a new cable and/or different USB port?
I did DFU restore, updated to 8.4 via latest version of iTunes using a downloaded ipsw file. I rebooted both iDevice and Mac immediately prior to jailbreaking. Make sure iTunes isn't open before running PP.
Good luck!

Tried that

is it still possible to borrow a computer for the jailbreak and then come home and restore from your own?
Or does it have to be the same computer you sync with?
I once jailbroke while staying at my sister's house when I didn't want to risk apple coming out with a new iOS before I got home. That was a few years ago, so maybe things have changed.
