I can't remember if we download the firmware THEN run the jailbreaking program or if we have to wait for the jailbreak to come out, download the hacked ispw (?? or w.e), THEN run the jailbreak...

basically is there anything i can start downloading while im waiting for the jailbreak app? and to those who have 3.0...how do you like it?

There's a few things you can do to "get ready" if you like. :)

1. Backup your device. If you are currently jailbroken, download AptBackup. This will aide in getting back any apps (that hopefully still work in 3.0) that you downloaded from Cydia.
2. In iTunes, when prompted for the 3.0 update, click Download Only. This will download the stock package that Pwnage Tool can use once it is released.

This way when Pwnage is released, you'll have a current backup of your device and when using Pwnage, it can find the 3.0 package. With that said, Pwnage usually doesn't update baseband so depending on how the new Pwnage Tool is built, they may recommend you update to a stock firmware first (to update your baseband), then use Pwnage to create a custom .ipsw and restore that. After this is done, if you need to, you can unlock your iPhone with the Dev Team's new ultrasn0w.
