Please forgive if previously asked -- I scanned the first 10 or so pages of the forum and did not find the info.

Does the iPhone 3G come with pre-loaded maps for the GPS? All I've found is information about its compatibility with Google maps -- not much use if you've either turned data off or are out of 3G coverage.

I'd like to think so, as even my Garmin GPSIII from 1999 has some maps pre-loaded despite its 2MB of memory ...

So what if I'm really in the boonies?

No it dosen't come preloaded. It relies on the 3g/edge network + google maps to load the maps for you while driving

That's unfortunate. As I said in the OP, even the most basic 10-year-old GPS units had some pre-loaded maps.

Anyone know if there's any iApp or other way to get a basic map onto the iPhone? I'm planning a long trip into rural, phone-coverage free areas soon and would like to use GPS for waypoints.

Wait for the 3rd party app if you are looking for pre-loaded apps.
