Anyone planning on pre-ordering AND switching away from AT&T?

Any idea how this works? Do you just buy the phone, then deal with switching carriers? That sounds like common sense, but then AT&T rarely makes sense.

Are you pre-ordering via Apple.com or did you plan to use your new carrier?

If you are sure that your new carrier choice has good coverage where you plan to use your iPhone then when you pre-order, you just enter your AT&T phone number and the other account information that is required on the form and your current AT&T phone number will be ported to your new carrier.

You can always order a new line for your new carrier, you will get a new number and then you can try out the coverage and then do a port of your AT&T phone number. This would be my first choice and it is the lowest risk.

Just a note, once the port completes your AT&T account will be closed so make sure that you understand any ETF fees before you go this route.

I'm almost positive I'm going with Verizon, so could I pre-order a Verizon-ready phone through Apple and do the switch myself? Or do I have to go into a Verizon store to get it done?

Well you can do that today so it should be just as easy after Apple makes the announcement.

You can walk thru the steps right now on Apple.com to see what data you need to provide to make the switch. Yes, you can do it without going to the Verizon Store.

No reason to expect the process to change much after the new iPhone launch.

I am planning on doing the same thing except moving from Verizon to Sprint if the iPhone comes to Sprint. When you port your number when is it effective? If I preorder the next iPhone and it takes a week or two to get here will I still be able to use my current phone? Or is the number ported immediately? Thanks.
