Just to get this straight....

Im with AT&T and plan on switching to Verizon to get the iPhone 5. My contract is up with AT&T so i dont have to worry about ETF.

- Pre-order through apple.com and set up new Verizon account with new phone numbers.
- When iPhones arrive call Verizon and have them port over the phone numbers from AT&T.

Is that it?

When you pre-order, it should give you the option to port your number which then you input your phone number and AT&T info. When you get the phone and activate it, it will start the porting process.

ok so then when i complete the pre-order process ill still have my AT&T service until i hook up my new iPhone 5 to iTunes which then it will switch over to Verizon?

Will this process work for 4 phones at once? Bringing 4 phones over from AT&T to Verizon and want to port all the numbers. Will I just need to put in a preorder for all 4 phones and will it let me setup a mobile share plan?

yea im interested in that too because im actually bringing 2 phones over to Verizon from AT&T.

Yep, your AT&T service will still work until you activate the iPhone 5. Which then Verizon should automatically cancel your AT&T service during the process.

I too am switching to Verizon from AT&T. (I'll take the ETF hit to get better coverage. Will still end up paying less than I would to stay with AT&T with no subsidy) I did a test order on the Apple website but didn't see the option to order multiple phones. There is a link on one screen which covers the question of ordering multiple phones, but I never saw the link it refers to. I did the same on the Verizon website and was able to easily create an order for multiple phones, so will do that tomorrow.

As a side note, wondering how many early adopters..those getting the 4 and 4S on launch day with AT&T...will move to another provider? If you must have the iPhone 5 and absent any subsidy by AT&T, really a no-brainer to me.

I don't see a way to order multiple phones on one plan either.

For what it's worth, I just got off the phone with a Verizon rep, and she said that if you pre-order through the Verizon online store tonight, there is not a limit for how many phones you can pre-order/prepare to transfer when you are opening a new account. It will all go through in a single transaction as part of the process of setting up a new account with Verizon for a Share plan.

So in my case I will be pre-ordering three iPhone 5's with a new Share Everything plan, and porting our numbers from AT&T once I actually receive the phones next week, and she did not express any concern about that.

Hope this helps.

I'm also switching from AT&T to Verizon, but my AT&T contract ends on 9/30/12. So if I understand this correctly, I can do this:

1. Pre-order iPhone 5 (Verizon) on Apple.com tonight, providing my AT&T account information
2. Receive iPhone 5 on 9/21/12
3. Wait until 9/30/12 or later to activate the iPhone 5 with Verizon, and porting my number over, using iTunes
4. And this will eliminate any ETF

Assuming my current AT&T service will not be interrupted until I activate the iPhone 5 with Verizon. Is this the process?

So I'm on AT&T and my wife is on Verizon. We are both out of contract. I want to switch to be on Verizon with her and have a share plan. We both want to order new iPhone 5's. Since she will be upgrading but my phone will be adding a line to her contract should I do this through the apple site or the verizon site at midnight?

Also switching

Thanks for the info! I was concerned about them canceling my ATT while waiting for the phone to arrive, but it makes sense they won't cancel anything till activation.

I had iPhone 4 since preorder and been waiting for my contract to be up, which it was in July. AT&T promised to build out this area for the last 9 months, because it's terrible. Saying buh-bye and happily making the transition to Verizon.

My wife has Verizon on the iPhone 4s so I know how much better it is.. Which is sad.

3am here I come.. With bed head, drewl and all..

Is there any real advantage of preordering through Apple and not Verizon?

I thought you could get two phones through Apple (what I need).

And I see I'm not the only one planning on staying up/waking up at 2:55 to get ready to preorder! You think that is really necessary?

No, not exactly the best plan.

You should just order a new Verizon pre-order without porting your AT&T phone number. This way you can activate your new iPhone 5 next Friday and try out the Verizon service. Then on 9/30 you can request the port and Verizon will port your AT&T number. This will close your AT&T in the process.

Also you should swing by this Verizon site for some details on Porting and to verify that you current AT&T number qualifies for porting.

I am switching two phones from Sprint (no contract to worry about) to Verizon. I also am wondering these questions:

1. Is it better to pre-order from Verizon's site or Apple's site? Are there any difference in shipping costs or shipping delays ?

2. Will Apple's site allow me to order the two phone's in one transaction? I think I read above that Verizon it is confirmed you can do that?

3. The sprint account is in my wife's name and I want to put the verizon account in my name, will I still be able to port our sprint #'s without issue?

Thanks!!!!

I checked my number and it qualifies for porting.

If I open a Verizon account first, and then port my AT&T number over, would that not mean I'll end up having 2 lines? Or I can port my AT&T number over replacing the new Verizon number?

I always thought porting number means adding a new line.

Just verified with Verizon. I can port my AT&T number at a later time to replace an existing Verizon number. Thanks Dave!

I'd like to agree with this post. Please do not give your ATT info when placing this order. Allow Verizon to give you new cell numbers that will become temp numbers. AFTER the 30th and your contract is over, Call Verizon and port the ATT numbers to the Verizon phones. Verizon will take it from there and move your numbers and cancel your ATT service.
