Pre-ordering in AT&T store a good idea?

I was told by my local AT&T store that if I pre-order for them today they will ship the phone to their store in 7-10 days. From what I've read in other threads (albeit they are mostly people pre-ordering through apple) the pre-orders don't ship for weeks and weeks. I don't really see a point in waiting a month for the phone since I bet by then it will be much easier to simply walk into a store and pick one up.

Did anyone here recently pre-order with AT&T in their local store and can possibly shed some light (or even speculation) on whether this is a good idea, or if I should just try to walk in to stores when they open to buy one?

If they're telling you to order then they must not have any in stock. If you simply can't wait, try calling around to different AT&T, Best Buy, Radio Shack and Apple stores to see if they have any on hand or when they expect more. Wal Mart also carries them so check them out as well.
