Can't figure out how to turn off these notifications...

When I get into my car and my phone connects to Bluetooth, I get a notification from Maps on my watch predicting my destination based on my travel patterns which tells me how far away I am and how long it will take me to get there.

This isn't a new feature but I had disabled this somehow in the past... After the iOS 16 / watchOS 9 update, these notifications have returned.

NOTE: I don't want to turn off the Significant Locations feature in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Significant Locations. I do enjoy the convenience provided by this feature, just don't want my watch to buzz every time I get in the car.

I figured out the solution I came to previously. After the iOS 16 update, "Sounds" was turned back on in the Maps notifications screen.

Turing this off still pushes the notification to my watch and phone but I don't hear/feel the notification. When I get out of the car, the notification dismisses on it's own. This solution allows me to keep the helpful Significant Locations feature enabled without being annoyed by the notification every time I get in the car.

Thank you! This was annoying me every time I got in the car.

I was just about to post a thread about this.

What is the purpose for this? Does it track your drive to work/home/wherever to have more driving data? Interesting, once it popped up for the gym I was going to. Kind of felt good that I had been going there enough.

To literally tell you how long it expects to get where you’re going…

  • Significant Locations: Your iPhone and iCloud-connected devices will keep track of places you have recently been, as well as how often and when you visited them, in order to learn places that are significant to you. This data is end-to-end encrypted and cannot be read by Apple. It is used to provide you with personalized services, such as predictive traffic routing, and to build better Memories in Photos.

I really love this feature but a lot of people are scared of it without knowing what it is exactly.

I live near a large state park, through which I like driving to get to my photography studio. There are four other ways to get to the studio, all within similar timing (11 minutes), but I prefer the state park route because it's scenic and feels good.

On a few occasions, I've gotten into the car in the morning, and it's told me to take a different way. I checked why, and that road is closed off for forest maintenance. If I didn't get that note, I'd have gone and had to go another 10-15 minutes out of my way to get around it.

Same when I have to leave work to pick up the kids at school. It *can* come in handy sometimes!

Yeah I get that. But why does it tell me, I solicited, every time I get in my car? I’m not pulling up Maps nor do I need to have this information.

It usually predicts wrong. That is what annoys me. For example I stop to pick up Chinese food on the way to my nieces and it predicts I am going home next. It usually predicts I am going home when I usually have other stops before going home. I often don’t leave home and then next don’t drive home. Is there anyway to stop this? It is annoying.

Did you ever figure out how to turn this totally off on the watch? So annoying, I agree

Did you try the workaround I posted? It’s not the same as turning this notification off completely but has solved the annoyance of it for me.

I have the same issue with my iPhone as @macrlz9 in that the phone makes a map prediction when it connects to my car, but what's super annoying for me is that the predicted destination show up on Maps in CarPlay. I can tap the "X" on the destination pane on the car's screen and it goes away, but I would like it to not do this at all.

Incidentally, my car has the same predictive feature in its native navigation system, but it is easy to turn off. I wish I could do the same in the Maps app.

I haven’t tried the workaround, but just might have to. Can’t believe there isn’t a way to turn that off…..

I understand the being (mildly) annoyed by it, however, it’s useful also. If you don’t like it, you can disable it right? just turn off significant locations

I think I may have figured out how to turn off the map predictions without turning off the significant locations.

Go into Settings, Siri & Search, scroll down to Maps, and turn off all the Suggestions. Alternatively, go to Settings, Maps, Siri & Search to reach the same controls.

Mine were all switched on, and after turning them all off I did not receive any further map suggestions/predictions.

Good thinking!
I find the Siri suggestions IN the app super useful such as locating parked car, suggesting to navigate to my next appointment, etc. so I’d rather not loose that functionality.

I’m trying to leave all 4 on except the last option “Suggestion Notifications” and will see if that solves it.

This seems to be it! Turning off this one switch will keep the Siri suggestions functionality but without a notification! Woo hoo!

This is so annoying. Ok I get it it’s helpful when I’m at work going home but it’s also telling me each time I go in the car in my home town. I’m literally 5 mins away at the grocery store and tells me it’ll take me 5 mins to get home. How useful! Not!!!

I wonder if it's a way to discretely or stealthy monitor the traffic in the area.

If you usually go home, and you're going home, and that's on mapping your drive, it could in theory tell if it's taking you longer than normal, assuming due to traffic. Yeah, your 5 minute drive might not do much but a 25 minute drive through a large city may be beneficial.
