Predictive text and punctuation?

I'm enjoying predictive text a lot in Sonoma, but punctuation is a pain. If the prediction is at the end of the sentence, as far as I can tell, you have to hit space, then delete (because of the extra space added), and then type the punctuation. This is different than iOS, where you can double space for a period (doesn't work on Mac) or just enter punctuation and it enter the predictive text plus the punctuation, sans space between. Am I missing something about how to use predictive text with punctuation on the Mac?
