preferred settings lost after sleep

hello folks,
this is my first post because I have never faced a problem that I couldn't find the solution for on this forum. guess there is a first time for everything.

so my problem is a simple yet annoying one. I had the "automatically hide and show the Dock" boxed ticked once and then did not like it. so I unticked it.

now, every time I put my macbook air to sleep or restart it, the option is ticked again.

the weird thing is that this is the only setting that seems to change on its own.

any idea?
