I'm trying to burn an audiobook to a cd for long trip. Only itunes won't tell me how many CDs this will take. Is there a preferred way of doing this? Any way I can get this on just a few CDs?

iPod preferred way of Burning an Audiobook to Cd?

if your car cd player can read mp3 format you can burn it as mp3 instead of wav. (you can change that setting in the prefs just in case you don't know) it should all fit on max 2 cd's if not one, that way. also depends on your file size.
the other way is getting larger disks, ie dvd's but i don' think you car can rock those.
