Premier Pro and MPEG files

I am a new user to Adobe Premier Pro. I teach photoshop and illustrator now i'm planning on teaching video.

The camera's my school has are Sony HDD ( Hard Disk Drive ) and the clips they create are MPEG files. Premier Pro won't support these files. Is there something I'm missing or is there a good converter out there to convert MPEG files to AVI's?
