Preorder directly through Apple, or through a carrier?

So I plan to preorder the iPhone 5 tomorrow and I'm pretty stoked; this will be my first iPhone. Having never done an iPhone preorder before, I just want to know:

Is it better to preorder directly through the online Apple Store, or through your cellular carrier (Verizon, in my case)? Are there any differences?

Biggest difference are the return policies. Apple no restocking fee, carriers typically 15%. Both options allow use of the apple stores for the warranty service.

I'd like to hear some thoughts on this as well. I prefer Apple but I don't know if I'll even be able to through them
