I think there were smaller stores that sold Apple products, most of which have since gone out of business due to Apple retail stores.

For me it was MacMall and MacWarehouse. I brought my first Mac locally from the now defunct Computer City.

It was always the local Micro Center for me. They had a dedicated Mac section in the back corner.
