Preordered iPhone and new carrier - Question

I preordered the iPhone 5 from Verizon. I am currently on T-Mobile. I requested that my number be ported to Verizon. My question is: when do I cancel with T-Mobile service and will my t-mobile phone still work til I activate the iPhone 5 when I get it or will both of them work until i cancel the t-mobile service?

When I switched from T-Mobile to AT&T, I never actually cancelled, I just activated my phone with AT&T when I got it and T-Mobile got deactivated automatically.

So did you go to the AT&T store to activate it? I thought they were already pre-activated and you just plugged them in into your computer through iTunes to activate it. (This is my first iPhone so forgive me for my n00bness)
