I will be putting my 2010 MacBook Pro up for sale prior to getting a new rMBP. What is the best (most secure, most practical) method of clearing the hard drive prior to selling it?

If you are planning on selling it with lion then most likely your 2010 MBP does not have a recovery partition. Make a bootable usb for lion and boot from the usb. Use disk utility to erase the hard drive and then reinstall lion. Once installation is done just shut it down. This way the new user will be required to register the MBP under his name and can setup username and password.

If you don't have lion, then use the restore CDs that came with it and basically go through the same process. Boot from the CD, erase and reinstall snow leopard.

Delete all your files.
Launch Disk utility>click on your partition on the left> erase> erase free space.
This will delete all your files while leaving the OS intact.
