'Preparing to Import Mail' Taking Forever

To make a long story short.... I had to create a new user for myself last week when my old user decided to crash leaving me with a broken heart and a blinking finder. Within this new user I have managed to transfer all my photos, music, documents, etc without copying them (hence taking up twice the space). However, when it came time to load up Mail on this user it won't let me past the 'preparing to import mail' window, which has been 'preparing' all day. I can't access anything within mail until it does this but for some reason I don't think it's going to happen at this rate. Any suggestions? Also, how easy is it to transfer all my former user Mail into the new user Mail? I have a ibook G4 circa 2005 on Mac OS X Version 10.4.10. Thanks!
