Presentation/"infowall" software?

I'd like to use our old FP iMac at school as a display for recent photos and messages for parents. Does anyone have suggestions for software that could do neat things like display slideshows, rolling text messages, titles, etc, all at the same time.

How bad would it be to keep the iMac 17" display on for 9 hours a day?

Any suggestions?
