Well I have no idea why, but press and hold no longer gives me the option of various accents on the letters.
The keyboard setting are as apple describes. Found a terminal script that should activate is, didn't work.
I'm out of ideas . . . . . anyone?

Further testing, Pages and Word do have it, but in safari . . . no go.
