Greetings,
I have a macbook pro 10.7.3. When I start up my laptop, about 5 - 8 different programs startup without me starting them. Open Office, Mail, Photoshop, Adium, etc... How can I prevent all these different programs from firing up when I start my laptop?

Thanks for any tips.

System Preferences >> Users and Groups >> Login Options

I see nothing there that has to do with startup programs or programs that start on boot up.

But thanks,

Okay, I found it.
System Preferences >> users and groups. Then choose user >> Login Items.

But the window is blank where it reads, "These Items will open automatically when you log in:

<shows nothing>

I think what you want to disable is the auto-restore function that Lion has. Any applications you have open when you reboot your Mac will automatically relaunch when this is turned on.

To turn it off: System Preferences -> General ->Uncheck "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps"
