This is an issue that's long annoyed me, and every browser on every platform has this functionality, yet I've never used this function intentionally, only by accident.
So, let's say I'm filling out the form to post in this forum, and I switch to another application briefly. I come back to continue writing this, but didn't notice that the text field was no longer the focus. I press backspace to delete a character in the form, and boom, I go back a stage in history in my browser, and worse, I lose what I've just written.
I use CMD+[ to go back and fourth in my browser history, or use a gesture on my trackpad, so have absolutely no use for using the backspace for this function, and I'm sure many others are in the same boat.
