Is there an easy way to turn off the feature that turns on my screen every time I get a notification? Or is that a per application setting - from what I can see?

I notice that my phone lights up a lot while just sitting there on my desk for things I'm doing on my laptop (Hangouts, email, etc...).

I check my phone often enough that I would like it not to turn on the screen every time it gets a notification. I have a feeling this would be a significant battery boost...

Home and Lock Screen is the #1 battery drain by a 20% margin from the next item (Hangouts).

Thanks for your time!

You can change settings for notifications for different apps and disable lock screen notifications basically (Settings > Notifications). You'd have to unlock the phone to see new notifications from any apps that you configure that way.
