I have a Macbook Pro 2,1 running 10.6.8 that I'd like to prevent from sleeping when the lid is closed. I'd like this to work whether I'm logged in or not.

InsomniaX works, but on a per-session basis, by which I mean each time I need to log in as a user and disable lid sleep from the InsomniaX menu. Once I log out or restart, the settings are lost and I have to do the same thing all over again.

I went in to the InsomniaX package and found the Insomnia r7 kext it loads and copied it in to my /System/Library/Extensions/ folder with proper ownership and permissions. Cleared kext cache and rebooted, but this seems to have no effect.

The reason why I want to do this is because I have moved on from the MBP, and I would now like to use it as a server with the lid closed. I'd like to just be able to put it somewhere and access it remotely when I need it. But if I need to physically access it to disable sleep every time it reboots or something, that is not very convenient.

The only way I know how to do this is to have an external display connected to it and to adjust display settings to mirror displays. I have also done this:

If you want to disable it, you can take the magnet out from behind the screen. Just take the front screen cover off and there is a small magnet which when removed, disables the sleep when closed function. I'm not entirely sure if you void the warranty when doing this, but it works.

and it worked for me.

I recommend an app called ZZ Sleep - been using it for over a year now and it works perfectly.

I use it because I keep my Macbook in a BookArc, but when I'm doing some GPU extensive work in InDesign etc I take it out of the Arc and open the lid just a little bit, to help the computer cool without triggering its internal display.

Hello, i have the ''should i sleep'' , i purchased it from the mac App Store for about 2$. its the best i've tried... really amazing...and of course it works with the lid closed in clamshell mode
