is there a alternative app for viewing pictures besides preview? am i missing something? im new to osx and cant figure out why i cant cycle through pictures.. instead having to open each one independently. the same sort of situation when navigating through finder windows.. any advice? is this just the way it is?

You can cycle through pictures with Preview. Just select all the pics you want, then right-click and open with Preview. Then you can cycle through them.

You can also highlight a group of pics, then press the space bar to view them individually, in a grid, or in a slide show.

You can also use iPhoto.

what about when clicking something in a finder window? is there no way to keep them in the same window with back and forward cycles instead of new windows?

In Finder, you can click View > as Icons (Command+1) or View > as Cover Flow (Command+4)

I use quick look rather then preview.

Select all the files then click the "eye" quick look button.

even easier, if they're all together in a folder, press the space bar and use the arrow keys to navigate through the items in the folder.
