Preview can't view large files

For some reason, when I select an image file and try to open it with Preview, it doesn't do anything. This happens with larger files (> 4 MB). It seems to work when I use it on smaller files. Any ideas why this is happening? I am using Leopard on a MBP with 4 gig of RAM.
