Preview function problems

Hi

Having great trouble using 'Preview'. Im attempting to add letters to a series of pictures. (I'm losing items that i have photographed A-H e.g). I can open a photo from my library, i can add a letter ('A' for instance) to it but thats as far as i get !!!!! If i attempt to save it or export it i just end up staring at the timer icon for ever; I'm the forced to quit the programme.

Any advice ? (I have a Mac with El Captain)
