Every time I open something in preview it keeps trying to open a very large file that freezes preview and I am not able to do anything except force quit preview. It is a numbers file, that I have opened before, but for some reason am not able to open it now. The problem is, that I am not able to access the preview menus when this happens, so I can not change the "resume"' feature that was added with Lion.

In system preferences under General what is checked?

Check Close Windows when quitting an application, see if that helps.

You are so right, I did not even notice when I replied. I got an email notification of your reply and went to the OS Mavericks forum and could not find the post. Now I know why
Not sure which OS the OP is running though.

hehe.. But, thanks... I was looking for this too... hahaha...

Hold down <shift> when you launch the app, and it will launch without opening any documents.
