Preview not opening

I removed Adobe Reader having been advised it was a security risk and not really required on my MBP operating Lion, as Preview would do the job.

Today I wanted to read some pdf documents on a website, I clicked on them and was faced with just a black webpage.

How do I get these pdf documents to open in Preview
