Previous file showing when opening new file

This happens in word, ppt, excel for Mac. When I open a brand new document the previous doc that I was looking at opens first. I close the programs out when I exit cmd-q style so I know they are completely shut. What would cause this?

If you're on Lion, when you close an app without closing the application's windows first (e.g. quit word without closing all your word documents) the default behaviour is to reopen those windows next time you start the app. To avoid this, close your documents before you quit the app.
