I have the Macbook Pro released one before the latest one, i.e. bought in April 2008. It is a 2.5GHz variant with 4GB of 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM. Is it true a 64 Bit machine? I want to run a live distro version of Linux Ubuntu on bootup, but clearly if my MBP actually is 64 Bit then I will need to download the 64 Bit version of Ubuntu for it.

When did the MBPs go to 64 Bit if they currently are? Hope this makes sense.

All Intel Core2Duo's are true 64bit machines. Generally any Mac with the Merom or Penryn CPU's and Santa Rosa Chipsets will run in full 64bit mode with 64bit data paths.

The very first generations of the Core2Duos were 64Bit too but their Chipset was only 32Bit... I don't remember the name of the chipset, sorry.

the 64-bit chip, 32-bit chipset hybrid was back in Oct 06 release. Merom chip + Napa chipset.

Great thanks, good to know I am all 64 Bit, ;) I'll get onto downloading 64 bit Ubuntu then.

Does OS X take much advantage of having 64 Bit Architecture? I mean what advantages does my MBP have over one of the earlier non-64 Bit versions?
