on amazon the 15" macbook pro 2.53ghz 250gb is £1,216 but the new one is more expensive by more than £400! Is it that much better? I've been waiting for the updates for months but I'm not paying out that much more - simply can;t afford that.

Probably not. You don't provide a lot of helpful information (what you use your machine for, which model you were looking at), so nobody can say for sure.
The new one has dedicated GPU (a lot better) and up to 30% faster CPU
