I am trying to do a simple website, and I am having a very difficult time understanding how to do it. I'm thinking I should just pay someone. What can I expect to pay?

depends what you want/ need, and who you get to do it. strait old html would come pretty cheap. php or like would be more, and so would flash. i personally work in flash and usually charge $15 - $25 per hour, unless its done by job, and then we work something out case by case for those bigger projects. so i would say you could find someone to do it for anywhere from $50 on up depending on how simple you want it.

What part are you having difficulty with? If you get along well with Microsoft Word, you can try just saving the files in "*.html" format. It's probably not the best idea, but if you're on a small budget and making a small page, it'll do. Have you tried a WYSIWYG editor, like ... ok, I'm sure there's some for the Mac, but I can't think of any. Microsoft Frontpage is one, but I think that's only on Windows.

Elaborate a little more on your needs, budget, skill level, and the type of site you're trying to do. It'll help us answer your question.

Some WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editors for the Mac:

Dreamweaver (obviously!): Expensive and prob overkill for your needs.
Freeway: Has has some good reviews, coding might not always be top notch and still fairly expensive.
RapidWeaver: Nice price and sounds pretty straightforward.

I think they all have free trials so you can test them out before you decide, maybe the free trial is all you'll need! ;) :)

Thanks to all who responded

I am going to try Rapidweaver, seems to be the quickest, and cheapest route. meanwhile I'm going to try to find some time to learn css. thanks again everyone.

$15-$25??!!! You must be INSANE. If you acutally have good website skills you can charge whatever you want. At a minimum I charge £50 p/h ($95), and go up to double or triple that for something super pro.

In fact.. don't charge more. If you have skills, I should outsource to you, and get myself a second job.. LOL. :p

here in the states, i find especially without a degree, a lot of places wont consider myself for such a position, therefore occasional freelance at those prices is just fine for now at least while im still at college.

Here in the United States of Bush all the good-apying jobs went to India, and anything left over is comparable in wages to working in restaurants. I worked as a Web Editor at a newspaper for 8.50 an hour, the Web Designer and Web Master made 3-4 dollars more per hour - and those were the only Web jobs available in the State of Alaska. :(

I would offer a bid of 300.00 for a standards compliant XHTML / CSS site complete with images and multimedia and 4-5 pages. And then charge 12.00 an hour to update it every-so-often. So how do I get a job in the UK? :)
