Print Word to pdf problem

I find that I cannot print a Word file to pdf: the print launches and then pauses itself, and if restarted returns to pause after a minute or two. I'm using OSX version 10.5.6, and Word2008 version 12.1.5. I've tried resetting the driver and this has made no difference.

This is not something I need to do often, and I have never done it on this machine (which started life with Word2004). How can I get it to do a print to pdf file, please?
