I am looking into a laser printer for my small mac home network and was wondering if I can save money by using printer sharing in Panther rather than getting a network-ready printer. I'd be hooking the printer up via USB to my main Mac and sharing over the network. Is this a relatively easy thing to do?

As we're on the subject - does anyone have a recommendation for a good laser printer under $400?

here is how you do it

Hook the printer up to the Mac and install it (cd or on the systems preferences under Print & Fax).

After printer is installed, open System Preferences. Third line down, choose Sharing. Then check Printer Sharing. Done.

Then of course, go to all other Macs (Print & Fax) and look for network printer, and the shared printer should come up.

edit: in the print & fax area, hit set up printers..., then under shared should be the printer that you installed and shared.
