I have a Canon printer, and 'Share this printer on the network' is checked in System Prefs/Printers & Scanners on my Mac mini running 11.4. I have a few presets saved in the mini's Print dialogue.

My MacBook Air will see the shared printer, and now that I've copied over from the mini's Library/Prefs the file
<<com.apple.print.custompresets.forprinter.Canon_MG5300_series.plist>>
to the same location on the laptop, I see the presets listed in the laptop's print dialogue. But they make no difference to what prints.

For example, every time I select one of my black-and-white presets on the laptop, the print is always in colour.

No problem on the mini, which prints as the preset directs.

What's going on? What am I doing wrong?

What operating system is second computer using? You never really said anything! I ask because not until Appl e went from afp to SMB back in Lepord!
Ay, sorry—didn't mention the OS of the laptop because it's the same as the mini, 11.4. Another reason I was perplexed. I'd still welcome some help on this if anyone here actually knows anything.

Ok the is this a true networked printer? Does the printer have IP? If does have an IP put that into your Mac and make sure you have the same printer drivers in both Macs!

My suggestion is that you DON'T COPY the plist file.
Instead to to printers & scanners and DELETE the printer on the MBair.
Then... start completely over. Download a new print driver.
And... set all your prefs "locally" on the MBair.

Fisherman, thanks. So basically no benefit to settings from the sharing, I have to do everything manually on the individual machine. Yes?

The benefit is that a printer connected to a specific machine can be used from other devices. 😎 Still you have to add the printer on the the other devices. Sadly custom settings are not as easily shared than e.g. for network printers which allow saving settings on the printer.

EDIT: you can transfer the custom settings (everything which starts with com.apple.print. in /Library/Preferences) AFTER selecting the printer on the second computer. Make sure that the same printer driver is used on both/all machines.
