sorry if there's a better place to put this one...

I have a plain old printer (no wireless capability) plugged into my Airport. I print wirelessly from my iMac to this printer through the Airport every day. How can I print directly from the phone or iPad to this printer? Seems this should be possible if the iMac does it! Or do I need some type of driver/software on the iPad to make this possible? Thanks for any help folks.

The technology that Apple pushes for printing from mobile devices is called AirPrint. It is driverless, but the printer has to support the protocol.

However, there are Mac apps that will act like an AirPrint printer, and then use the printer driver to print for you. Look for Printopia. Install it on the iMac, and it will let you share out any of the printers it knows about via AirPrint. It will even support features like "Print to Folder" as a PDF if you like. It does cost money for a license, but it is cheaper than a new printer and works well. Their may be free apps floating around too, but I haven't used them.

Printopia also works .

And these don't require a hard connection from the iPad to the computer?

Try Printer Pro Lite (free) and see if it works. If it does get the app.

I have been using Lantronix xPrint server with an HP 4100 printer for the last 3 years without any problems.
