Hello,
I have my Canon PIXMA MX310 connected by USB to my iMac. I've been able to configure the computers and printer to print from from the MacBook while in OS X or Windows and the iMac is OS X. When I switch the iMac to Windows I can get the MacBook to print from Windows but not from OS X.
When I add Printer I can see under the Windows tab the workgroup/machine and printer but when I select the printer I am prompted for a username and password for the printer server...! I am the administrator on the iMac's Windows but did not setup a username or password when I installed XP. What should I be doing when it prompts for these?
Anyways, by choosing guest I have temporarily bypasses the password prompt and have been able to select the printer. It successfully adds to the printer list and when I try to print something it says printing....but nothing prints. When I click hold and then resume (as suggested on other sites) I get that "no client error" message. I read that this is usually resolved by then clicking Pause and then Resume, but that doesn't work either. Also, every time that I try to print from the newly selected printer that user/pass prompt comes up... I have gotten past it by choosing guest, or clicking OK with pass blank and even with just writing something random for a password. All 3 ways get me to the same point of a print queue that says Printing, but isn't printing and leads to a no client error message.
Firewall on XP is off, sharing is on, network exists, drivers have been updated on both systems in both environments... I'm at a loss.
I've even tried the Advanced option when adding the printer as I read somewhere that you can manually enter a SAMBA URL for the printer such as this: smb://user
ass@Workgroup/Machine/Printer However, I'm a little unsure as to what I should be putting for user and pass as I have never set those up in windows.
Main questions,
How do I properly get around the registered user/password prompt considering I don't have either of those because I never created them.
Is my username in XP just Administrator by default with no password? Do I need to set up a password?
How should I construct my SAMBA URL (if I even need to be using that)? Would I just omit the user/pass portion, ie smb://mshome/windowsosx/mx310?
Any other help/suggestions regarding this printer networking issue would be greatly appreciated. I've tried to provide as much information as I can but if more is required to help me please let me know.
Regards,
Rahsten
