I have two mac's...an M1 Mini and an M4 Mini. I have a HP Deskjet connected to the M1 Mini using an actual wire. It can do wireless but it's so hit and miss and fails regularly.

The M1 prints just fine with no problems. I have shared it on the network and added it as a printer on my M4 Mini but each time I print I get this silly "Hold for authentication" error and I can't print. I'm not set up as a user on the computer but in the printer sharing settings it's set to EVERYONE to print.

I mean, it's 2025...why all these stupid speed bumps to stop you from doing stuff like simple printer sharing?

What I'd try (have no idea if it will work):
Leave the m1 connected via USB (or is it ethernet?).

For the m4, try wifi printing (AirPrint) again.
Does that make a difference?

If it DOES work, just leave it that way.
What works... works.

You have two computers and one printer on a network

What has happened is it sees one as the host and one the client.
The one that isn't printing is the client
Go to the client computer System settings>printers and scanners, find the printer and delete it with the - command.
Now add it again with the +
Select the shared printer from the list (it should show as being shared by the other Mac).
It will ask you for the log in for the other computer- the one you use to open it with user name and password.
then check 'Remember this password in my keychain'

Now you have to go to the host computer and make sure printer sharing is enabled
System settings> sharing turn on printer sharing
Make sure the correct printer is shared and that the user accounts listed under Users include the account used by the client computer or Everyone" (with Print Only access if desired).
That should do it
If you can use Airprint it's so much easier.

If you want to be in 2025 then really it's best not to use your computer like it's 1998
A big part of the problem is that everything is so simple these days most people have forgotten that we had to do this sort of thing- and how

Or, buy a little USB hub (4-port) and connect it to both machines and the printer,
to make them equal in priority or rights.
I have 3 machines printing like that (see the list).
;JOOP!
