Printing to a Apple Serial Printer under Mac OS X

I have a G3 MiniTower with 2 serial ports, and I also have a USB to 2 Serial Ports adapter. Can I print to my Apple StyleWriter 2500? Even when the printer is connected througth the main serial ports or the USB ports I don't see it listed under the Print Center application. Can anyone help out? Do serial printers work in OS X?

Serial printers don't announce themselves to the computer. Only AppleTalk and Rendevous printers do that. As for your problem, it would appear that the Linux community has dealt with your problem. Take a look here.

eek...that is confusing... I wish someone could do it for me...or...can I setup say my Mac LC II (with ethernet) to share the serial Apple StyleWriter 2500 over ethernet?? Then maybe I can use IP printing...any help guys? Also thanks for the help, if I was able to fully understand those instructions I would attempt it but...I don't

That is confusing. I would try it myself if it was easier. Oh well. At least it can be done. Does anyone know of an easier way?

Okay, I have a B&W G3 and a LaserWriter Pro 600 and I'm running 10.2.6. I'd like to use the LaserWriter Pro, but that model doesn't have Ethernet, just LocalTalk, pc serial and parallel. So this is what I did....

I have an old 6200CD with a 10BT Ethernet NuBus card. I attached the LaserWriter Pro via LocalTalk adapter (PhoneNet) to the 6200 and attached the 6200 via ethernet to my 4-port cable router. I downloaded Apple's LocalTalk Bridge from HERE, dragged it to the System Folder, rebooted and configured, and voilá! It works! Even my bf's Win2K Pro machine can print to it (as long as you install the AppleTalk component).

hey graphic ump, yeah I did that but I need a serial cable for my printer I need to get one from my aunt's house. thanks anyway

i also have a beige g3 minitower with a stylewriter 2500 and I have the serial to usb thing. But I never found out how to use it in ten..

yeah those USB things are wierd, what is funny is if you look, you can see your Modem and Printer ports in Network settings instead of Ethernet, haha, too bad it isn't that easy for Printing...

Keyspan makes a nice USB Serial adapter that works with Apple Global Village modems and may work with certain serial printers. I would check the Keyspan website:

As they have drivers for their serial adapter that are frequently more updated than the ones included in the box.
