Back in the day, Amazon offered Prime members half price and early shipment on the initial Echo product. I was all signed up, and then read about and realized that Amazon would be listening to everything it heard. I canceled and waited for Apple to enter the game.
Now it has been reported by Bloomberg that Amazon does indeed have people listening in and using the information however they choose. One has no doubt that Google does the same.
Some say Apple does this too, but as we are told, everything is anonymous and is not kept forever. Apple makes such a big deal about privacy that it has essentially bet the franchise on getting it right. I don't expect to hear honest former employees reporting anything contrary.
So with HomePod, you get a secure, beautifully sounding and looking device that fits perfectly in the Apple ecosystem. The guesses at 6% market share don't bother Apple, they look at revenues and profits, plus how each product contributes to the ecosystem. I expect HomePod, just as it is configured, to have a long tenure.
