I'm seeing a few of these 'new' 'sealed' in box computers now that i've changed my parameters. Most mention a receipt, but i'd assume they all have one (and any that dont would be stolen). Concerning a 2019 16" MBP. Questions, questions, more questions...

1, How does the basic warranty (1 year) work? (i cant afford Applecare)

2, If i buy a 'new' sealed box computer off a private seller (and get the original receipt), do i still get the 1 yr warranty? (minus however long he's had it obviously)

3, I'll likely be driving to the city (60 miles) to find one. Dealing with the store the seller bought it from would be problematic. If its say, a Best Buy (there is one in my town), would it work there? Or do problems go directly to Apple?

I searched these questions and found bits and pieces. And Apple's site is not much help.

You call apple, or schedule an appointment and have them work on it. You have proof of ownership

you get the prorated warranty, i.e., what ever is left on that warranty from when the buyer purchased it.

No, they won't even realize the laptop you bought was from another customer, and even if they did, they wouldn't care. Its not their property but yours.

Quick reply!

So basically, i buy a MBP in a sealed box from a private seller and get the legit original receipt, i'm good for whatever's left in the year? Too easy. I like easy.

Guessing to have Apple work on it though, i'd have to mail it to them? There is no Apple store within 60 miles of me, only Apple dealers (Best Buy, Staples, etc.).

Is the serial number included on the outside of the box? You might have the seller email you a photo of it so you can check it.

If you buy an Apple device which is a brand new, sealed, not used before, you will get a full one year Apple warranty as soon as you power it up for the first time and connect to the Network.

The OP asked about "used", not "new".

If they never powered it up, you will get a full one year warranty.

Then it's not "used", it's "Like New".

Personally, given how easy it is to get shrink-wrap machines, I'd not trust anything now that's advertised as such. It's way too easy to shrink-wrap a brick.

Is there not a specific, Apple-only type wrap? With a tab or something? I'd imagine made for this exact scenario...

I see the same tab in the same place in all the different ad photos. I'm not too worried about stolen stuff, you can usually spot a shady prick a mile away.

Yes, there is and that's the only type I'd personally accept. Just the other day there was a thread here where a buyer was talking about the lack of a tab on the shrink-wrap on a device they'd brought.

Is the serial number shown on any of the pictures?

I'm pretty shrewd, and paranoid. Even if Apple never used a tab, most scammers would wrap it with cheap plastic anyways. I think you'd tell if something was up.

No, just the big spec sticker on the back of the box, some have pics of the receipt (not close enough to read). I'm sure they'd provide if asked though. If they dont, well... that'd be pretty sketch...

Man, if your budget is that tight, I’d just buy a used 2015. There’s no way I’d buy a new mbp without AppleCare at this point. You only have 60 days to get AppleCare after the initial purchase.

Applecare is $420. Thats ludicrous.

Also, i've had it on three of the Apple computers/phones i've owned over the years, never once used it.

I forgive anyone for not reading my epic full-page story on the '15'4" 2015 vs 16" 2019' thread, but the TL/DR clifs are: I absolutely cannot be dealing with problems. My patience is GONE. I need the best machine possible, and i think high tech like this should be bought new. Only settled on the 2015 back then because of all the hype about it. The 2-5 years usage and all the pitfalls that come with that would cost me sleep... unless i found a new, sealed 2015 somewhere... which is not likely.

Further, however painful it may be... my budget has since grown. I live on my computer...

Craigslist. As in, i can go see it in person, handle it, etc.

I'd still open the box, check the serial matches and also power it on to make sure it, well you know, works and is ready for you to use.

But then again, I'm so paranoid I don't trust what I've just written either...

Do you have to get laptop? Is Mac Mini not an option?

It looks like you may need to call, meet in person. Or ask for a photo with serial number and check on Apple website.

Will the seller allow you to open and try the machine before paying? If not, I'd walk away.

If it was you, would you?

Problem with that, is that the second i open it, its not 'sealed' anymore. What if i dont buy it? I just cost the guy a few hundred bucks. If it were mine to sell, no way i'd let someone open it without guarantee to buy and cash in (my) hand. Thats fair i think.

I would look on eBay. Find someone with a good feedback, buy and check after receiving. You are always protected.

I bought few Apple devices like that.
