Hi guys, I really need help here, don't take me wrong, but if you don't actually have a Pro Display XDR and a 6900XT your opinion or theory will be useless on a subject highly discussed on this forum already, so let's take this fresh on 2023 and try to find a solution.

At the moment I have: Pro Vega II (display 6K) + 6900XT (render)

What I would like to have: 6900XT (display 6K) + 6900XT (render)

⚠️ If I connect the Thunderbolt 3 cable to the Pro Display XDR on the 6900XT USB-C I can only get 5K ⚠️

Is there any solution to make the 6900XT display a 6K native resolution + brightness control on macOS?

The Belkin VR cable is really a solid option? Anybody with this combo working at the moment?

Thank you very much 🙏

I've got real 6K + HDR + brightness with RX 6600 XT + Dell PCIe USB-C DP Alt Mode adapter card. But XDR is determined as 5K display with 6K as "more space" scaled resolution. I'd like to fix that and make 6K as default

Not possible, I have fight with this problem and gave up. Bought a W6900X, the only way to go native 6K with Pro Display XDR is using an MPX module. If we talking until 5K everybody is sorted. You can use "more space" will look like 6K but is not. Check this tread #77.

It's not "looks like", it's native 6K in my case. I can see the difference between "6K via 5K" and native 6K - it's easy for everyone to see it.
Also I checked AGDCDiagnose output and SwitchResX scaled resolution base - both report 6K. I assume that's because my computer is a Hackintosh with OpenCore boot loader + kexts that make DSC available via USB-C.

Anyway, I get native 6K. The only cosmetic problem is default resolution in settings.

I miss your signature, hackintosh, can't help :p

Actually I missed your Mac Pro too =)

But I'm surprised that you didn't get 6K. I got 6K under Windows and 2080Ti that has onboard USB-C (same as yours 6900XT) and I used a regular 10gbps USB-C to USB-C cable to connect XDR. Any other options anyhow related to TB (cables, onboard/external TB controllers) didn't help to get 6K, same as you - 5K is the highest resolution. But just a basic USB-C cable makes magic here.

For macOS I had two options:
- 6xxx series AMD card with onboard USB-C (Original AMD 6800XT or higher)
- 66xx series AMD card without USB-C and USB-C+DP muxer - cheaper

I went with the second option and got 6K under macOS with no problems using basic USB-C cable again.

So I assume in your case with 6900XT and onboard USB-C the mistake was using TB3 cable instead of a regular 10 gbps USB-C. You should try that if you still have it.

Why aren't you using the Belkin Huawei VR cable? That's how I get 6K on my XDR from non-natively-supported machines.
There's no even need to use it, because there's onboard USB-C output on 6900XT. Again, a regular 10 gbps USB-C (NOT TB and NOT Apple USB-C charge cable) cable makes magic.

Some tested facts on:

macOS + Pro Display XDR
- MPX W6900X delivery 6K native
- RX 6900 XT delivery 5K native USB-C (no power on XDR hub)

bootcamp windows + Pro Display XDR
- MPX W6900X delivery 6K native
- RX 6900 XT delivery 6K native USB-C (power on XDR hub)

Can you please share this screen on your Mac?

I'm only showing 5120x2880 right now on Monterey. I haven't used this set-up in a looooong time (I have since moved on to a Mac Studio). Looking back at some of my old posts when I originally had this working, it was with Big Sur.

Apparently, Monterey/Ventura has broken DSC on AMD GPUs? So my recommendation of the Belkin Huawei VR cable may no longer be applicable (still works with XDR + Windows 11, I tried this recently).

Like @etc said, ensure you're not using a TB cable, nor the cable that comes with the XDR.

@betovzky Looks like others with the same combo haven't been able to use the XDR + 6900XT because DSC is broken with Monterey/Ventura:

It's all fine, I'm broke too after buying the damn MPX W6900X + RTX 4090 :p

The only sad part is on the Apple side is broken by design, until they manage to catch up with AMD and NVIDIA GPUs.

Great, but probably my machine is unique and DSC works under Ventura on it. Or it's just specific only for Macs.
