Hi everyone,

I just got a refurbished Pro Display XDR, upgrading from a Studio Display. I've noticed that the XDR seems to have less contrast compared to my MacBook Pro XDR and the Studio Display. I found a workaround by adjusting the Accessibility settings to increase the contrast, but I'm not sure if that's a proper solution.

At this point, I'm unsure which device is more accurately calibrated, since my MacBook Pro 16", Studio Display, and iPhone all show similar contrast levels. Would you recommend calibrating the Pro Display XDR?

Does your Pro Display XDR have a nano-coating? If so, then this is one of the reasons, because any form of matt coating leads to a reduction in contrast.

For the price Apple charges it should be perfect in your eyes, that's my take on it. I have an ASD and enjoy using it - and had to go through two different panels to get a good one, so there's a bit of panel lottery like many other Apple devices.

Yeah, but honestly, I think it comes down to how the XDR is calibrated, since in the 'Photography' profile they all match in terms of contrast.

I found this test on black levels. It says that on an ideal monitor, all of the squares should be distinguishable, even the very dark ones, and the background should be as dark as possible.

Interestingly, on the Pro Display XDR, even the darkest square is visible, while on the MacBook Pro, even the second or third squares seem to blend into the background.

I think this answers my question..our eyes are used to very contrasty screens like MacBook Pros, OLED TVs, iPhones, etc., but these are not reference or ideal monitors to rely on.
