iPhone 11 Pro Pro max - can’t hear phone call unless on speaker

Someone will call and if I answer it normally And put it to my ear, i can barely hear the person speaking
switching to speaker or putting in a headset resolves the issue

is this a fixable problem?

I assume you turned the volume all the way up? Can you hear anything?

I once had an iphone with NO sound out of the earpiece (came that way out of the box) and turned out it was a manufacturing defect and needed to be replaced. Not sure what would cause it to have SOME sound, but not loud enough.

Yes, I should have mentioned, Volume was turned up to max, first thing I checked
worked when I first got the phone, not now
